$100,000 Alphabet Soup Starts All-Stakes Pick 4 at Parx
Although the featured Pennsylvania Derby is the order of the day on the September 20 card at Parx, bettors shouldnt sleep on the $100,000 Alphabet Soup Handicap the first race of an all stakes pick four sequence beginning in race 9.
With eleven runners heading to post for the mile and a sixteenth race on the grass and no clear-cut favorite, the Alphabet Soup could be the best wagering event on the card. Breaking from post number six, Roadhog is the tepid 3/1 morning line favorite for trainer Elizabeth Merryman. Roadhog has recorded 10 wins in 34 lifetime starts including wins in the 2010 and 2013 Alphabet Soup Handicap. The seven year-old gelding is clearly comfortable over the Parx lawn and cannot be dismissed despite dropping his last two starts.
Page Mckenney has a nose for the wire
Page McKenney (7/2 ML), has been a win machine this year finding the winner’s circle in five of his seven starts in 2014. The Mary Eppler trainee has won four consecutive races including the Robellino Stakes in his last outing. Page McKenney is a notable three for three over the Parx turf course adding to his appeal.
Edge of Reality offers back class
Edge of Reality (5/1 ML) was well-beaten in each of his last two starts finishing seventh in the Lure Stakes August 2 at Saratoga, and fourth in the Robellino Stakes August 23 at Penn National. However, the four year-old son of Lawyer Ron won the Grade 3 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx last year and certainly fits with this group of Pennsylvania-bred horses.
