Baffert Has Loaded Pair for $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks
On Sunday at Sunland Park, the track will host the 15th edition of the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks. Scheduled to be run at a mile and a sixteenth, the race has drawn a field of eight three-year-old fillies.
Callback tops the field as the even-money favorite on the morning line for trainer Bob Baffert. Baffert has saddled the winner of the past four installments of the Sunland Park Oaks. Callback, a bay daughter of Street Sense purchased for $375,000, has won two of her four starts including the Las Virgenes (G1) last time out. She has been training steadily since then and will have regular rider Martin Garcia in the irons from post position two.
Maybellene trying to regain competitive form
Second choice at 3-1 on the morning line is Maybellene who also comes out of the Baffert barn. A sophomore daughter of Lookin at Lucky, the bay filly has been on the board in five of her nine starts and is trying to return to form after finishing off the board in both starts this year. She will get a jockey change to Victor Espinoza and they will break from the outside post.
Suva Habor aiming to avenge disqualification last out
Also in the field at morning line odds of 4-1 is Suva Harbor for trainer John Sadler. A gray daughter of Rockport Harbor, she is trying to rebound after winning the Island Fashion Stakes last time out but getting disqualified and placed eighth. Prior to that, she had two wins and has been training steadily since her last race. Martin Pedroza will be aboard from post position five.
