Birdatthewire Launches Comeback in $200,000 Chilukki Stakes
On Saturday at Churchill Downs, the featured race is the $200,000 Chilukki Stakes. Carded at one-mile on the main track, the Grade 2 event has drawn a field of eight fillies and mares.
Birdatthewire, one of two fillies in the race for trainer Dale Romans, has been tabbed as the morning line favorite at 2-1 odds. A three-year-old daughter of Summer Bird, she has been on the board in six of her eight starts and is a three-time winner. She won two graded stakes races earlier in the year and has been on the sidelines since finishing fifth in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in May. Corey Lanerie will be aboard and they will break from the inside post.
Gold Medal Dancer trying to regain winning form
Second choice at morning line odds of 5-2 is Gold Medal Dancer for trainer Donnie Von Heme. Bred and owned by Pin Oak Stud, the five-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro has won seven of her nineteen starts and is a multiple graded stakes winner. She is winless from three starts since scoring in the Azeri Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn in March and will try to rebound after finishing sixth in the Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2) last time out. Luis Quinonez will be aboard from post six.
Royally-bred Serene Melody a live longshot
Also in the field at morning line odds of 15-1 is longshot Serene Melody for trainer Charles LoPresti. A five-year-old daughter of Street Cry (IRE), she is out of the champion mare Serena’s Song and has won three of her fourteen starts. She is trying to earn her first black type victory and was last seen finishing third in the HBPA Stakes at Presque Isle Downs. Julian Leparoux will be aboard and they are scheduled to break from post position three.
