Saratoga Woodward Stakes Picks
At odds of 1-2 in the morning line, Frosted is the clear favorite for the 2016 Woodward Stakes, but there are some interesting choices behind him.
Breaking out of the #3 post, jockey Joel Rosario should be able to get clear of the gate and put Frosted in good stalking position early, with Bradester (6-1) just to his outside expected to want the lead. As long as he doesn't get trapped in a pocket, the recent winner of two straight Grade 1 starts should be in good position to take aim on the lead as the field turns for home. It will probably then depend on how much effort Bradestar has had to use to make the lead how far he can hold on as they approach the wire.
Two starts back Shaman's Ghost (12-1) rode a rail trip to a win in the Brooklyn Invitational, and while the 1 1/8 miles here might not be his best distance, he'll likely get the same trip and gets first-time lasix after tiring last out. Samraat (10-1) is a horse that enjoyed a solid Triple Crown campaign in 2015 and always seems to show up, but hasn't had a win in long time, and likely won't get it here. As a longshot on the bottom of the ticket, Breaking Lucky (20-1) has been competitive in graded-stakes events in Canada, with a win his last out, and has a previous win on the dirt in the Prince of Wales.
The Woodward Stakes goes Saturday, Sept.3 from Saratoga. Post time is 5:46 PM Eastern.
