Value Galore in $1 million BC Juvenile Turf Fillies
The Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf Fillies features a field of 14 two year-old runners ten from the United States and four from Europe set to go a mile on the turf for a purse of $1 million.
The last two editions of the BC Juvenile Turf fillies have been won by European-based horses, and this year’s renewal is led by a pair of Irish-bred 5/1 shots in Osaila and Qualify. Osaila enters the race on a winning note, capturing the Tattersalls Millions in her last start October 4 at Newmarket in Great Britain. She is a Group 3 winner for trainer Richard Hannon and will retain the services of jockey Frankie Dettori, who has won multiple Breeders’ Cup events. Osaila will continue to race without Lasix. Qualify, trained by Aiden O’Brien, won the Group 3 Weld Park Stakes September 28 at The Curragh in Ireland. Qualify has two wins in six lifetime starts, but was defeated soundly when she faced Group 1 and Group 2 competition. Qualify will receive Lasix for the first time.
Favorite tries two turns for the first time
Wesley Ward trains the 7/2 favorite Sunset Glow who enters the race off a pair of graded stakes wins - the Grade 2 Sorrento and Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. Both of those efforts however, were one-turn races on Polytrack. Sunset Glow does have a win in her only career turf start - a five furlong sprint effort at Belmont. The speedy filly will be racing around two turns for the first time.
Lightly-raced filly might pop at huge odds
Bettors looking for a good value play in the competitive race might be intrigued by the D. Wayne Lukas trained Lady Zuzu (15/1), who was an impressive maiden winner October 9 at Keeneland. Lady Zuzu is among the last foals of Dynaformer and was a $1.2 million purchase as a yearling. If she can repeat her form against better horses, she could land a major share of the purse.
